...As I Was Saying

...as I was saying (writing), all of this high-tech stuff is a little overwhelming to a guy that remembers being worried about bomb shelters in the mid-'50s, along with pink and black jackets, blue suede shoes, '55 Chevys, Andre's, Stan's, and the famous Michener's Drive Ins. Whoops. There I go, dating myself.

However, if you were lucky enough to read my first blog (reprints are available), then you've already figured out that I was slow to jump on the technology bandwagon. Even things like fax machines (which for years I would not allow to be used in our office to communicate with clients, because I felt it reduced a one-on-one connection). It took even more time to accept cell phones, and heaven forbid I be caught dead on the Internet highway or utilizing the “convenience” of e-mail.

But through constant encouragement from Donna, and grins of “I don't believe my dad” from my sons and grandsons, I began to accept the new technology, and finally submitted my first blog.

First of all, it wasn't too bad of an undertaking, and no sooner did I blog, than I was thrown into Facebook. Yes, I do have one of those and judging by the number of “friends” I suddenly have, I don't know when any work will get done. I have a whole lot of people to talk to. I'm just not sure when I will find the time to do this Facebook stuff justice. I must admit though, that because of this blog, and Facebook, I've found people that I had totally lost track of over the past years. This included one of my favorite marketing people, Hope Dilbeck, formally of Standard Pacific Homes and Castle & Cooke, as well as my old friend David Brust, which I thought had gotten lost in the jungles of South America looking for the perfect coffee beans. They're both still living and loving our city. Makes me wonder how many other old friends I'm going to connect with because of my new-found use of technology.

The only problem right now is not knowing where to post what comments, what's for everyone to see, and what is for an individual to see. I'm supposed to be getting some direction from my grandson so I'm sure I'll get better on the Facebooking thing. So what's next? Facebook for Bakersfield Magazine. In fact, we want you as a fan, so visit our page today. Just go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bakersfield-CA/Bakersfield-Magazine/231086020304?v=wall&viewas=0&ref=nf

Of course, now that the staff has me on a “bracing technology” path, what's next? How about MySpace? And then on to the newest...my own Twitter?! Now that's something to look forward to.

In the meantime, come join me on Facebook, I'm always anxious to meet new people (and those I've lost track of). Stay tuned...I will be back next week with some more words of wisdom...

More of Les later...
